Ask the stylist. I had long hair and i didn't know what to do when i got it cut short. when i went in, i asked her what would be the ideal cut for my face cause i wanted it cut short within a certain length range. oh, btw, guys usually do a better job. and for te pricey salons, you're only paying for the flair. even a cheap and indipendent stylist will do just as good as someone in a fancy salon charging $80. i pay $12 for my cuts at a shop acros the street from my restaurant that's owned and run by 2 sisters and i trust them more than anyone else in any other place. especially with their opinion.
I want to get my hair cut short how should I get it cut?
in a layered bob, it is really cute--plus it will keep some length

It would help if you posted a link to a pic of yourself. Your face shape will have a lot to do with your decision.
If you're a busy person, nothing says "wash 'n' go" like a very short pixie cut. But if you want enough length to do some styling with, best to go with layers or, if you do not have a round face, go with an really stylish A-line bob.
Or, of course, your stylist can help a great deal with your decision, preferably someone you've been going to for some time and you can trust (stay away from the chain "butcher" shops like Supercuts et al).
